Retinal vs retinol on video, September 2026
What is retinal?
Retinal, short for retinaldehyde, is a form of vitamin A used in skincare. It sits one step closer to retinoic acid than retinol does. Skin converts retinol to retinal, then retinal to retinoic acid, the form that acts on skin cells. Retinal skips the first step, which is why brands position it as a faster or stronger alternative to retinol.
On short-form video, retinal is mostly a K-beauty story. Korean brands hold eight of the ten most co-mentioned brands, and 41.7% of September retinal videos also mention retinol, often in side-by-side explainers.
