Social Listening Keyword Limits: What 12 Tools Count (2026)

TL;DR: Social listening keyword limits are not comparable across vendors. Across 12 tools checked in October 2026, vendors count capacity in at least six different units — keywords, keyword rules, topics, projects, queries and saved searches — and only seven of the twelve tie a numeric limit to a named public plan, starting at 1 to 5 units. So "3 keywords" and "3 topics" mean different things until you know what each unit can hold.
Ask three vendors how many keywords you can track and you get three answers in three currencies. "3 keywords" is a term budget. "3 topics" is a container budget. A "3 projects" plan is a third thing again.
Four entry tiers say "3" as of October 2026, per each vendor's pricing page: Brand24 keywords, Awario topics, YouScan topics and Mentionlytics keyword rules. Our own arithmetic, not a vendor claim, divides each tier's monthly mentions by those units. It lands between roughly 667 mentions per unit at Brand24 and 10,000 at Awario. Mentions are shared across units, so treat the spread as an illustration, not a quota.
Buy on the headline number and you may learn mid-contract that a mention cap pauses every query. This guide compares 12 tools, shows which caps matter more than the keyword count, and gives you a fair method to compare capacity.
Social listening keyword limits depend on the unit each vendor counts
Vendors count six different things, and a pricing-page number means little until you know which.
Keyword: a single word, phrase or hashtag you tell the tool to match. Whether a Boolean combination counts as one keyword or many is vendor-specific and often undocumented.
Keyword rule: Mentionlytics' term for a saved keyword entry, with the same counting question.
Topic: a container holding many keywords and conditions (Awario, Determ, YouScan, Sprout Social's listening topics).
Project: a monitoring workspace containing queries (SentiOne).
Query: a Boolean search expression holding many terms and exclusions (Emplifi, Talkwalker, Brandwatch's API docs).
Saved search: a stored query that counts against an allotment (Hootsuite).
Mention: one collected result. The monthly mention cap is usually the binding limit.
Social listening keyword limits across 12 tools, side by side
Seven vendors tie a numeric entry limit to a public plan, ranging from 1 to 5 units. The other five publish nothing comparable. Figures are as of October 2026, per the vendor's pricing page unless a cell says otherwise. We left prices out.

How we verified: we took the figures from the vendor pricing and help pages linked in the table and fetched them in October 2026. We fully verified nine rows. Social Searcher, Sprout Social and Hootsuite are partial. Where a vendor blocks automated access or publishes no number, the cell says so.
The rows fall into five patterns. Term-count caps (Brand24, BrandMentions, Mentionlytics) put a number on keywords or rules. The pages we fetched do not say how a Boolean query with many OR terms counts, so ask first. Our Brand24 alternatives guide covers the wider field.
Containers with soft term limits (Awario, Determ, YouScan, SentiOne, Emplifi) hold many terms in one unit, so the binding cap moves to mentions, history or characters. Our Awario alternatives comparison goes deeper on one of them.
Three patterns publish no entry count we could verify: saved-search quotas (Hootsuite), bundled allowances (Talkwalker) and unpublished plans (Sprout Social, Emplifi). Social Searcher counts actions, not topics.
"Unlimited" keywords still come with mention and query-length caps
"Unlimited" rarely means unconstrained. Four vendors pair it with another cap:
Awario offers unlimited keywords per topic, but caps topics (3, 15, 100), new mentions a month (30,000, 300,000, 1,000,000) and stored mentions per topic (5,000, 15,000, 50,000) (Source: Awario pricing, 2026).
Determ lists unlimited keywords on every tier, yet its help center recommends about 500, and the entry tier holds 1 topic and 1,000 mentions a month (Source: Determ pricing, 2026; Determ help, 2026).
YouScan promises unlimited mentions in its footer, but Starter 3 says up to 15,000 a month, and custom plans say "unlimited sampled mentions." Those are different promises (Source: YouScan pricing, 2026).
Emplifi grants unlimited users and profiles, but a monthly mention limit suspends all queries when you hit it (Source: Emplifi docs, 2026).
Query length is the second ceiling. The published limits:
YouScan: 100,000 characters per search query (Source: YouScan help, 2026).
Determ: 2,048 characters for the whole topic configuration, filters included, if you collect X data (Source: Determ help, 2026).
Emplifi: about 1,900 characters when you define keywords with no filters, and filters count toward the total query length (Source: Emplifi docs, 2026).
Talkwalker: up to 50 operands and 4096 characters per query, per its developer docs. Confirm the interface follows the same limits (Source: Talkwalker developer docs, 2026).
Brandwatch: 600 characters for Quick Searches and 100,000 for Saved Searches, per its Social Media Management help page (Source: Brandwatch help, 2026).
Boolean rules differ too: SentiOne allows wildcards only at a word's end (Source: SentiOne operators, 2026), YouScan needs four characters before an asterisk, and Emplifi supports no wildcards.
Six more vendors publish no keyword, query or mention counts we could verify: Brandwatch, Meltwater, Sprinklr, Mention, Keyhole (now Muck Rack) and Digimind (now Onclusive). Brandwatch is the partial exception, because its help center states the character limits above and ties saved-search counts to your contract. Sprinklr's help center describes a Topic, Query and Keyword List hierarchy (Source: Sprinklr help, 2026), and Meltwater uses tailored pricing with annual agreements and a 12-month minimum contract on most partnerships (Source: Meltwater pricing, 2026). Ask all six in writing for the counts.
Compare capacity fairly with an eight-step method
Convert nothing until you know what each unit holds. Follow this method:
Write down each vendor's exact unit name.
Define demand in one neutral currency: distinct subjects (brands, products, competitors, campaigns), plus the terms and exclusions each needs, counted separately.
Ask how Boolean is counted, one unit or one per term, and whether filters count against the same limit (Emplifi's do).
Compute subjects covered: units available divided by units each subject needs. Test with your real query, not a demo query.
Estimate monthly mentions for your busiest subject, then compare the cap and what happens at it: suspension, overage, sampling or an upgrade call.
Check backfill depth, and whether stored history is capped per unit (Awario stores per topic).
Check sources and seats per tier. SentiOne lists X access from Business, Determ includes Instagram, and Hootsuite prices per user.
Get every answer in writing, with the page URL and the date.
Put these questions to each vendor:
What is the exact unit, and how many terms and exclusions fit in one?
How does the vendor count Boolean?
What is the maximum query length?
What happens at the mention cap?
Does the vendor sample data?
What is the default backfill?
Which platforms does each plan include, and does the vendor collect short-form video as video only or with text?
Some platforms organize capacity around one query, many keywords
Some platforms skip the keyword count and organize collection around the query. That is a container model, so it earns the same scrutiny as the rows above.
Syncly Social organizes collection by query rather than a keyword count. A query can hold multiple keywords, and collection covers TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. If video is where your category talks, evaluate it as video social listening.
Apply the same questions to Syncly Social as you would to any vendor. Ask what one query can hold, how terms and exclusions count, what happens at a limit, which platforms are included and what the default backfill is.
Key Takeaways
The unit matters more than the number: "3" means 3 terms at one vendor and 3 containers at another.
Four entry tiers say "3", yet our arithmetic puts them between roughly 667 and 10,000 monthly mentions per unit.
"Unlimited" hides other caps on mentions, stored history and characters. At Emplifi, hitting the mention limit suspends all queries.
Only seven of the 12 tools tie a numeric limit to a named public plan, so get the rest in writing.
The keyword count is the least comparable number on a pricing page. What matters is what one unit can hold and what breaks when mentions run out. Stop asking how many keywords you get; ask how many subjects you can cover and what happens at the limit. To run these questions against Syncly Social, book a demo.
